Things to Do in Manchester for Under a Tenner
The best of Manchester is free, and the rest is close. Museums that took centuries to fill, canals that built the modern world, and afternoon plans that cost less than the meal deal you ate on the way.

The free heavyweights
The Whitworth is a proper gallery sitting inside a park — art, then trees, then a coffee overlooking both. The Manchester Museum on Oxford Road has the dinosaurs, the mummies and the South Asia Gallery (closed Mondays). The John Rylands is the Hogwarts one. All free: the Whitworth and the Manchester Museum are on campus, and the Rylands is a short bus ride away on Deansgate (Wednesday to Saturday). All better than another afternoon in bed watching a series you hate.
The Science and Industry Museum is the fourth free one, and the one that explains the city you’re standing in: the oldest surviving passenger railway station (restoration means some buildings are shut — check before you go), a replica of the world’s first stored-program computer, and the whole industrial mess that made the place.
One cultural thing per term per parent visit keeps the phone calls short and pleasant.
The canal-and-market circuit
Castlefield is where Manchester started: Roman fort, railway viaducts, canals, and the best grass in the city centre to sit on. Walk it from town in fifteen minutes. New Islington Marina on a sunny evening is the same trick on the other side of town.
Afflecks is four floors of vintage, vinyl and piercing studios — free to browse, dangerous to browse, the ring you’ll buy notwithstanding. The makers’ markets that rotate through the NQ and the universities are the same sport with better food.
The cheap seat
HOME on First Street does student-concession cinema tickets — £7.15 before 5pm on weekdays, booking fee included — for arthouse films, the big releases, and a bar that doesn’t judge a daytime matinee. The Royal Exchange releases £12 banquette day seats at noon on the day, in person or by phone, not online.
And the best under-a-tenner in the city: a day return to anywhere. That’s the day-trips guide, and the railcard takes a third off.
