The Guides

Long-form, dated, and honest.

The Picks

Ordered by the guide, never by a commission. Every one comes with who it’s wrong for.

The Skips

Half a guide tells you what’s good. A whole one tells you what isn’t.

  • Za Za Bazaar’s student buffet

    Skip

    Harbourside

A fixed-price world buffet that says it can seat up to 1,000 at once. Students pay £12.75 at lunch and £16.75 at dinner, Monday to Friday, with a physical NUS card or university ID (no UNiDAYS or Student Beans, and no student price on bank holidays). That lunch costs more than soup and a sandwich at The Canteen (£8) or a Classic Pitta at Eat a Pitta (£8.50).

  • Bristol Dockyards at full price

    Skip

    Harbourside

Brunel’s SS Great Britain, renamed Bristol Dockyards in June 2026. An adult ticket is £22 online or £25 on the door, and the student rate is only for groups of 15 or more. To be fair, the ticket gets you back free for a year, and the Afternoon Saver from 2.30pm is £13 online. M Shed, on the same side of the harbour, tells Bristol’s story for free.

  • A Clifton afternoon at Bristol Zoo

    Skip

    M5, junction 17

Anyone sending you to the zoo in Clifton is out of date. Bristol Zoo’s own site lists only Bristol Zoo Project, just off junction 17 of the M5 near Cribbs Causeway, where an adult day ticket is £25 (prices change with the seasons) and no student price is listed. The Zoological Society’s 2021 plan was for the Clifton gardens, which opened in 1836, to become homes and a conservation hub.

  • Aerospace Bristol as a cheap day out

    Skip

    Patchway

An aviation museum where even a student ticket is £18 online or £20 on the door. It does get you back free for 12 months, and the café, Flightline Kitchen + Bar, doesn’t need a ticket. It’s closed on 13 and 14 October. If it’s a museum you’re after, Bristol Museum & Art Gallery and M Shed are free.
