The method
How Yuniversity works
Every student guide lists everything. We tell you what’s worth it — and what to walk straight past — and we show our working.
01
Picks, not everything
Yuniversity doesn’t list everything. Every place is a Pick or a skip, in the guide’s own words — and the order is the guide’s, never a commission’s.
02
Says what to skip
Telling you what’s good without telling you what isn’t is half a guide. The skips are marked, so you can find them before they find you.
03
First-hand, or research-led
Every guide says whether we’ve spent our own loan there in person or built it from current sources. No pretending either way.
04
Dated, corrected in public
Every guide shows the day it was last checked, and every fix is logged on the corrections page. Prices move; so do we.
What makes a Pick
We’d send our own friend there — not “it’s fine”, but their name and this place in the same sentence.
The price is real and student-true: checked in person or from a current source. If a price can’t be checked, the place doesn’t go in.
It has a “wrong for”. Every Pick says who it isn’t for. If we can’t write an honest one, we don’t know the place well enough yet.
What makes a skip
Skips are a public service, not cruelty. They name the trap — the promoter economy, the surge-priced taxi rank, the freshers’-fair hoodie haul — and say what to do instead.
We skip behaviours, chains, systems and hustles. Never a small business run by one family.
First-hand, or research-led
Every guide says which it is. First-hand means someone from Yuniversity has been there. Research-led means it was built from current sources and checked against them.
We don’t blur the two, and a guide never claims more than its label.
Dated, corrected in public
Every guide shows the day it was last checked. When something in a guide turns out to be wrong, we fix it and log the fix, with a date, on the corrections page.

The money rules
£ 01
Affiliate links, labelled
Railcards, banking, broadband, tickets. If a link earns us money, it says so next to the link — and never inside a verdict.
£ 02
Sponsors, marked
One “Supported by” slot per city, at a flat rate, always inside a dashed box. Sponsors buy visibility, never words. They don’t see a guide before you do.
£ 03
Deals, free to venues
Discounts we negotiate for you at places that already earned a Pick. A deal never makes a place a Pick, and never changes the order.
£ 04
Picks, never for sale
No venue can pay to be a Pick, to rank higher, or to remove a skip. The trust is the product; the money lives around it.
